Without a scent item, our teams <em>cannot <\/em>do their job, so this is vital!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>scent item <\/strong>is something that smells uniquely of your lost dog within a sealed container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When an <a href=\"https:\/\/northk9.co.uk\/LDTN\/2024\/01\/04\/active-search\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"124\">Active Search <\/a>is in progress, the Tracking Team will meet you and the dogs will work from your scent item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-nv-light-bg-background-color has-background\">If you have a multi-dog household, please bring a scent item that is <strong><em>solely <\/em><\/strong>used by the missing dog. Objects that are shared between dogs will not be effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instructions for Collecting a Scent Item<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to minimise scent contamination when bringing us scent items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose your scent item<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find a ziplock bag or similar, and turn it inside out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick up the item using the ziplock bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn the bag back the right way, without touching the scent item.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seal the bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternatively<\/strong>, you can use latex gloves to pick up the item and put it in a ziplock bag, or similar.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important that the bag be sealed. If at all possible, please try to provide 2-3 scent items; you can bag up your dog&#8217;s collar and harness separately, for example, or cut up your dog&#8217;s bedding to split into three bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any of these type of items are suitable for use as a scent item, providing they are used only by your dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A collar or harness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any &#8220;clothing&#8221;; dog coats, but also items such as bandanas, or snoods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bedding; blankets, vet-bed, mats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toys, especially soft toys or tug toys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grooming brushes or recently groomed fur<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-nv-c-1-background-color has-background\"><strong>Do not wash or clean your scent item<\/strong>. The most effective scent items are items that are well-loved and well-used, and have been fully contaminated with fluff, oils, and\/or saliva from your dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ideal Scenario<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a hypothetical, perfect world, your scent item will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have been made in advance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be stored in a glass container (sterilised jam jars\/spice jars, or small mason jars are perfect)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have been re-scented within the last 12 weeks (if you are using groomed fur, just add or replace the fur after a fresh groom)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be a multiple (ie. be 3 identical scent items)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We understand that most people will not have this, so please don&#8217;t worry.
